In German cellars

The lost culture of the Marshall Islands lies in German cellars. But it is sorely missed on the Marshall Islands. In the video, Meitaka Kendal Lekka talks about her thoughts and feelings when dealing with the numerous objects in German archives, objects that were brought to the German Empire during the colonial period and are still stored in the Federal Republic today, without there being any concept for a return transfer of cultural knowledge. Clearly something needs to be done here. But who does it? And when does it start?

ONE WORD wins at LIDF20 in London

Our documentary ONE WORD won the jury’s “Best Film / Special Mention” today as a German-Marshallese contribution to the British LIDF # 20.

The LIDF (The London International Documentary Festival) is one of the most important and prestigious documentary film festivals in the world (BAFTA: Category A), which regularly provides relevant impulses for the international film industry. The LIDF is also London’s oldest and largest film festival. The 2020 edition was postponed to the beginning of 2021 due to corona and was just taking place.

The jury awarded only four prizes among the 34 films that were approved and in competition. In the category of best feature film, ONE WORD received “Special Mention, Best Film, LIDF20” as a film “much of the moment and important because it demonstrated the effectiveness of participatory filmmaking (while) the story was vividly and beautifully told.”

HCCFF

ONE WORD just won the “Bronze Award” at the HCCFF (Handle Climate Change Film Festival) in China. Of course we didn’t go to Shenzehn personally to pick up the statue and the prize. Both were symbolically handed over by our chinese friends on the stage to our team of Marshallese and Germans. Here you can see some impressions from the award ceremony.

Liftoff Festival (Tokyo)

Our participatory documentary „One Word“ on climate change in the Marshall Islands was selected yesterday for the Tokyo edition of this year’s Liftoff festivals, which of course makes us extremely proud. For a whole week, many thousands of festival goers and representatives of the film business will see our film and that is good, because it is in the Marshallese concern to be heard in front of the world.

What we need

The music of our film One Word comes from pretty much from everywhere in the world, including bands like “Radiohead” and “Jethro Tull”. But of course there is also music from the Marshall Islands in One Word. The young guys in the video are also in the film. Christina Schulze met them spontaneously on the island of Ebeye when she had nothing else with her than a small handheld camera with a moderate automatic focus, but with a very good microphone. When we first heard this material in the editing room, we were completely blown away. Do you feel the same?

The last verse is: “Men eo jej aikuiji ej kejatdridrik”. It means: “What we need is hope.”

Climate Change Song
