Video Letters Between Freiburg and Majuro

As part of the theatre project Iakwe oder wie der Regenbogen aus dem Keller kam, young people in Freiburg explored the colonial history of the Marshall Islands and objects from the so-called Brandeis Collection at the Museum Natur und Mensch. This led to a video letter addressed to students at the Coop School in Majuro – and a few months later, a reply arrived from the other side of the world. The exchange was accompanied by a team around Vanessa Valk and Jens Burde as well as experts from Freiburg, Majuro and the United States; film production in the Marshall Islands was carried out by Viviana and Mark Uriona. The two videos offer an unusual direct dialogue about who cultural objects belong to, what stories they tell, and who should have the right to tell those stories.
